St Patrick’s Day

Sunday March 17th Kyle and Adelyn went to church. Avery and I had a little photo shoot! A friend/co-worker, Melissa, gave Avery the cutest little tie when she brought us supper last week so I had to make sure to get a picture of Avery wearing it! I just can’t get over how he likes like a little old man!

After Adelyn’s afternoon nap our friends/co-workers, Brandon & Brittany stopped over to meet Avery & drop off some treats. Unfortunately their 2 year old, Brody {who Adelyn LOVES}, is allergic to dogs and so he had to stay in the car while mom & dad took turns coming in to say hi & meet Avery. Adelyn was so bummed Bro Bro couldn’t come in to “pway”. But we plan to have a play date at their {dog free} house!

IMG_4618

Brandon & Brittany also have another little guy, Brayden who is 10 months old…and looks just like Brody! Adelyn was happy to play with Brayden…but she kept saying “Bro Bro bye bye” in the saddest voice!

IMG_4623

Later that evening we had a surprise visit from Kyle’s great Aunt & Uncle. His uncle makes hats, scarves, booties, etc. So they brought a few gifts for both Avery & Adelyn!

IMG_4630

And Adelyn had to model her new hat! Work it for the camera girl!

That evening both Kyle & I started to feel very congested, sneezed a lot, coughing followed, etc. No fun & not what 2 tired parents need at all! Kyle had already been fighting something and Dr Wallace gave him a “z pack” while we were in the hospital with Avery, but it came back. One more thing added in the craziness of adjusting to life with 2 kids!

Avery: 1 week

I’m backing up to catch up on the first few weeks of Avery’s life. My last update was when we came home from the hospital. Sunday was our first day at home, just the three of us! Not going to sugarcoat things, it was definitely an adjustment…a busy toddler & a newborn are a lot of work! Especially when you aren’t getting regular sleep, you can’t nap when baby naps ‘cause you still have a busy little bee running around! But it felt good to be home with our family of 4!

We happened to get a snow storm that night which made getting to our 7:45am appointment Monday morning quite interesting! Kyle had to get out and blow us out of a foot of snow before we could make our trek to the hospital. We had to go in so soon because they wanted to make sure Avery’s bilirubin levels weren’t too high. We dropped Adelyn off at daycare on the way so we didn’t have to keep her corralled while we were there. And thankfully we did. They had to prick Avery’s heel to draw his blood and drip, by drip, by drip they filled the vile with his blood. Needless to say it felt like FOREVER and Avery was NOT happy about it. We got a call later that morning that his levels were ok and we’d see the doctor again later in the week for his 1 week weight check.

IMG_0724

There wasn’t a whole lot going on during Avery’s first week. We did a lot of snuggling and chillin’ out! I mean who wouldn’t love snuggling up with this little sweetie!?!? This is off the topic of Avery, but my recovery has been wonderful! {nothing like my experience with Adelyn} And I’m so thankful since this time around I have two “babies” to take care of!

I didn’t realize how much I used to lift Adelyn. For two weeks I’m not able to lift her while I’m recovering, which makes it hard to do a lot of things like washing her hands at the sink, getting her in/out of her crib, we’ve moved diaper changes to the floor, etc. Despite all these changes, Adelyn has really done well adjusting to life with her baby brother!

IMG_0736

Avery, for the most part, is up about every 3 hours at night to eat. We did have one night, our 3rd night at home, that he ate at 11pm and slept till 4am! It would have been great if his big sister wouldn’t have woken up at 2am! I think the roughest night was on March 13th, Avery was up to eat at 10:40pm, 1:15am, 3:15am, 6am {he ate for 2 minutes & then was out}, and then again at 7am {where he finally had a full feeding}. AND…Kyle was up with Adelyn 3 times, the poor girl had a terrible cough. We were 2 very tired parents that next day!

But it sure does help that those cries that are waking me up at night are welcomed with this super cute little boy! And I love those “full tummy smiles” he flashes at me! Sure do love this sweet boy!

IMG_0743

This may be TMI, if you don’t want to know about nursing skip this paragraph…Tuesday, early morning, was the first day I felt like my milk was fully “in”. It also brought a 102 fever, chills, sweats, and headache…on top of already recovering from having an almost 10lb baby. I called my Doctor, evidentially this is something that can happen to moms when their milk comes in and she prescribed me an antibiotic. By the next evening I was feeling much more like myself! Since I’m on the topic of nursing, Avery latched so quick in the hospital. I was so proud of him & happy to be able to nurse! Now that we’re home though he will cry throughout a feeding or two each day, not every feeding. After some research and talks with family & our Doctor I think its his way of telling me he’s done {he will usually do it when I switch sides} or needs to burp. It was definitely something new…with Adelyn, once we got her to latch & eat she ate like a champ! Once again goes to show you how different kids can be!

On Wednesday we gave Avery his first bath at home. He wasn’t too sure of it at first and cried, but he quickly relaxed and enjoyed the rest of his bath…until we had to get him out! We couldn’t get him dressed fast enough, which he isn’t a fan of at all. He doesn’t like it when we have to put his arms through sleeves, his arms get stiff and he really does not like to cooperate!

IMG_4579

Also on Wednesday our photographer, Ashley, came to take Avery’s newborn pictures! Yet another different between my two kids…Adelyn’s newborn session lasted less than 30 minutes…Avery’s was over 2 1/2 hours! I couldn’t get him to sleep or even content for pictures for quite a while! But FINALLY Ashley was able to capture some amazing pictures! She’s awesome! Here’s a sneak peek!

On Thursday, when Avery was 1 week old, we had lots of visitors. Great Grandma Donna, Auntie M, and Grandma & Grandpa Greene. Kyle also went to work for a few hours, he teaches on Tuesday & Thursday nights. My Mom hung around for a few hours while he was gone to help out with my two kiddos.

Thursday was also the first time Avery peed during a diaper change! I was quite surprised we made it a whole week without a “shower” from him. And thankfully he hit the wall, not Mommy! We now have “pee pee tee pee’s” to “protect” us during diaper changes! Oh the differences from a girl to boy!

IMG_4599 IMG_4600

Friday March 15th was Kyle’s first full day back to work. He dropped Adelyn off at daycare and it was Mommy & Avery’s first day, just the two of us. We had Avery’s 1 week weight check, Daddy came home early and picked us up {I’m not allowed to drive for 2 weeks}. We also were able to squeeze an appointment in for Adelyn, she was still coughing at night. Avery weighed in at 9lbs 15oz and 22 1/8in long! Before seeing his weight, a question I had for the doctor was if he was getting enough since he spits up so much, but clearly he is getting plenty to eat! He’s already over 3oz above his birth weight in just a week! Usually they don’t expect babies to be at their birth weight until 2 weeks!

IMG_0760

Waiting to see the doctor was quite interesting, Avery was hungry {AKA crying!}, Adelyn was busy, she spilled her snack, Avery filled his diaper, and I think they were trying to torture us…the room was HOT! Looking back I chuckle at the craziness! Dr Wallace was able to give Adelyn some meds for her cough, which I was thankful for, the poor girl really wasn’t feeling well {no fever, just lots of drainage}. And we got a thumbs up on our little {big} Avery! We took Adelyn’s prescription in to the pharmacy and did a little shopping at Target for a few necessities, our first shopping trip with all 4 of us!

IMG_0764

That evening Grandma Sharon & Grandpa Jim came to visit. Grandpa Jim wasn’t able to meet Avery right away ‘cause he was sick, so this was their first meeting.

IMG_4610

As you can see from Avery’s first week we are adjusting to life with two kids, who we love so much! Stick around, I have some more updates to get posted!

Our Family Lately: Avery 3 weeks

I haven’t had the opportunity to update our ole family blog in over a week. I know everyone says that the 2nd child never has as many pictures, as big of a baby book, etc. I’m trying hard not to let that happen to Avery!

Today Avery is 3 weeks old! I cannot believe he has been here 3 weeks already, but on the other hand, its hard to remember life without him! I will do a full recap of what he’s been up to next week when he turns 1 month old {already?!?!}. But here’s a tidbit! He’s nursing about every 2 1/2 –3 hours during the day and usually up about 2 times at night to eat. The poor guy is gassy. You really have to work with him to get those burps out. And he is spitty, not projectile, but you’re guaranteed to get some spit at each feeding. It’s amazing to see all the differences between him and Adelyn {as a baby}. Don’t you just love a baby double chin?!?!

IMG_0824

Kyle was home with us for almost the first two weeks of Avery’s life. It was wonderful! He took the first week off and then only had to work a few days the 2nd week because of spring break at work. Love that we both work at a college with “extra perks”!

Adelyn has adjusted to her baby brother so wonderful! She isn’t overly jealous, just an average 21 month old! She loves Avery and everyday when she gets home she runs right by me {mama is old news!} to Avery and shrieks “baby brother”! And yes she has been going to daycare. I had a hard time with it and plan to do a post about it soon.

Speaking of Adelyn, the girl LOVES to take off her clothes these days. Sometimes she attempts to  put something different on…but not always…see picture below! This is how we found her one night after we put her to bed. Silly girl! And yes we did put her PJs back on…too cold to sleep in the buff! ha!

IMG_0798

Stay tuned, I planned to go back and update what we’ve been up to the past three weeks…I’m sure it will be Avery overload!

Catch Up

To make it easier I’ve posted links below for each post about Avery’s birth in chronological order. Check out the first few days with our sweet boy!

Avery’s Birth: Going Home

Continuing from this post here.

My Mom took Adelyn home for her afternoon nap and Kyle and I had some quiet time with our little guy before heading home. I took advantage of the sunshine coming in our room to capture a few shots of our precious baby boy!IMG_4517

IMG_4521

IMG_4524

I had been trying ever since he was born to get a picture of him yawning and I FINALLY got it!

IMG_4526

We also walked across the hall to say goodbye to some new friends. We knew them casually prior to Aery’s birth, but had a few visits in our time at the hospital and got to know them a lot better! Their son was born a day before Avery and is 3lbs lighter! And they happen to live a block away from my Mom’s house!IMG_4534

When Adelyn woke up from her nap my Mom brought her back to the hospital so we could go home as a family of four. My thinking was that this might help Adelyn with the transition. Doesn’t she look thrilled to take her baby brother home?!? Ha!

IMG_4536

Avery was NOT a fan of his car seat, but quickly quieted down {until we were about 4 blocks from home}.

IMG_4541

He was a big boy when he was born, but he sure does look SO little in his car seat!

IMG_4543

I felt MORE than capable of walking to the car, but my nurse said its hospital policy for patients to be brought out in a wheel chair. Guess it did double duty…me & Avery!

IMG_0716

And Daddy got us all in the car! Thankfully our back seat is HUGE and Adelyn & Avery’s car seats fit next to each other so I can sit back there with them and don’t have to crawl over one to sit in the middle. Plus Adelyn loves to look over at her baby brother {let’s hope that sticks!}.

IMG_0718

My Mom came home with us. Her & Kyle got everything loaded in from the car, we got take out for supper, and enjoyed our first evening at home together!

Let the adventure of raising 2 kids begin!

Avery’s Birth: Visitors

In case you missed it, click here to read Avery’s Birth Story. This post is a continuation of our time in the hospital.

After I nursed Avery Thursday night/Friday AM they took him to the nursery for the rest of the night so we could get a few hours of sleep. We knew the next day would be filed with family & friends who would want to meet our sweet boy! They brought him in once in the night to nurse. Friday morning I was antsy to see my little boy. It was after 7am and they still hadn’t brought him in, so we ventured down to the nursery to visit our little man. He was wide awake and completely content! They wanted to check his bilirubin levels because they thought he looked a little yellow.

IMG_4394

We had to get a few pictures with our little guy! They kept him in the nursery for about another hour and then brought him down to our room for his next feeding.

IMG_4398

Not long afterwards my Mom and Adelyn came up to meet Avery. To read about Avery meeting his big sister you may click here. After our time as a family Grandma Cindy got her chance to “officially” meet Avery. And, of course, he was greeted by his Grandma with tears! So sweet!

IMG_4402

Love my Mama!

IMG_4404

We had a low key morning, just the 5 of us hanging out. Adelyn kept busy with her big sister gift and we had more bonding time with Avery! {btw…love this picture that my Mom captured of my boys!}

IMG_4413

IMG_4447

My Step Dad came up around the noon hour to meet his newest grandson as well. Soon after Grandpa & Grandma took Adelyn back to our house so she could get in a good nap.

IMG_4415

Early afternoon Kyle’s Mom, Grandma Sharon, and his Grandma stopped up to meet Avery!

IMG_4436

This is Grandma’s 7th great grandchild {if I counted right!} and she has 2 more on the way this year!

IMG_4437

Auntie M {my sister} & Uncle P stopped by in the afternoon as well. They had a big weekend ahead of them and had to squeeze in a quick visit before they left town.

IMG_4441

Our children’s pastor from church, Pastor Doug, stopped by as well!

IMG_4452

Later in the afternoon a few girls from work stopped by, Linsey, Lori, and Nicole.

IMG_4453

My Dad, Grandpa Steve, stopped by as well!

IMG_4454

Our good friends and Avery’s “adopted” Auntie & Uncle, Mark & Kathy stopped up to wish us well.

IMG_4459

And they brought food! Kyle was a happy camper!

IMG_4457

My Grandma stopped by later in the evening to meet her 8th great grandchild!

IMG_4467

My two sisters and Hayden drove from Omaha that afternoon/evening to come & see us! I was so happy to have them come! Aunt Wendi & cousin Hayden

IMG_4478

And Hayden was very excited to hold “baby boy” and give him some love! Wendi says that Hayden talks often of “baby boy”!

IMG_4485IMG_4488

Avery’s last visitor he met on his first day was Aunt Stef!

IMG_4490

So thankful for my sisters…wish it would have worked to have them all there at the same time to take our “traditional” picture…might have to do some fancy photo-shopping! {see this post here to see the “traditional” picture I’m talking about}

IMG_4498

Saturday morning, my Mom, Adelyn, and Aunt Stef came up first thing to get in some more snuggle time with our sweet boy! Later on our room was quickly filled with my family, Aunt Wendi, cousin Hayden, and Grandpa Steve all came to visit!

IMG_4509

It was quite interesting keeping two busy toddlers busy in a confined space! Mickey Mouse on my phone worked for a while {until they were fighting over who would hold the phone!}

IMG_4510

Since it was the weekend I had a different Dr discharge me. He stopped in and had everyone leave so he could go over a few things. Once he was done with us, we had the green light to go home! Stay tuned for Avery’s going home post!
