A Day In the Life

Friday I did a guest post over at Melissa's Blog, Stafford Stories! She has been doing a series on Working Moms! I've really enjoyed finding other Mommies out there who work full time outside the home and reading about their routines & what works well for them! So here's what a day in the life at the Bangert house!

Hi all! I'm Darci and I blog {when I have time!} at The Bangert Family. I've enjoyed reading Melissa's blog over the years and when she asked for "Working Mommy's" to write, I was excited to participate, but also hesitant at the same time. You see I've only been a working mom of 2 kids for about 3 months and I have yet to feel like we have a good routine down, but we're working on it!

I've been married to my high school sweetheart, Kyle, for over 8 years now and we have two kids, our daughter Adelyn is 2 and son Avery is almost 7 months. We live in central "small town" Iowa within 40 minutes of both of our hometowns. I've worked for the local community college for going on 10 years now and Kyle began working there, as well, back in 2010. I started out a student worker in the Financial Aid office while I was attending college and have worked my way up to Director of Financial Aid. I also have a small part time job with RMS. They are a vendor Target hires to do sunglasses, cell phone brochures, and various other services in the store. It was a good opportunity for me to get some extra income to help with our debt snowball {any Dave Ramsey followers out there?}!  The great part is a can do it whenever I want {I'm not on a schedule} and the pay is good for a part time job. Without further ado here's a day in the life of me & my family!

6:00am Adelyn is jumping in her crib calling for us, ready to start the day! Kyle gets her up and turns on Mickey Mouse or Bubble Guppies to keep her entertained. I pump first thing. Avery has been sleeping in and when we get him up he isn't interested in nursing, so I pump & send a bottle to daycare. He must need some time to wake up before he's ready to eat! Kyle will usually get ready for the day during this time.

6:30am Kyle usually gets Adelyn dressed for the day after he's ready. I will fix her hair and get her a some cereal to tide her over till daycare. They serve breakfast at 7:30am so she eats there. During this time I'll also pack any backup outfits, diapers, etc needed for daycare.

7:00am I wake Avery up, change his diaper, & get him dressed. Lately he's been sleeping in and we've had to wake him, but before that he would be my alarm clock at 5am! I like this routine better!

7:15am Kyle takes the kids to daycare. I'm so blessed to have such a helpful & supportive husband! And now that I've got my family ready for the day, I get ready at this time. {side note: since we do work at the same place sometimes I will get up earlier and we'll carpool or I'll take the kids, but on this particular day, Daddy took them!}

The first of this year we switched to a new daycare and we couldn't be happier. Adelyn loves it and has learned SO much! Its a Christian daycare center, so she not only learns things like praying before meals or bible stories at home & church, but at daycare too!

7:45am I'm out of the house and head to the office. We are within 10 minutes of our work & daycare, which is great! Short commute!

8:00am Most people start their day with a cup of coffee, but I prefer oatmeal with bananas! Today I ate my breakfast as I caught up on emails & planned the day. Other days I will make a quick breakfast at home, just depends on how the morning goes!

I usually take a total of 3 pump breaks at work to ensure I get enough milk for Avery at daycare the next day. I also have 2 pumps, thanks to my sister! I keep one at home and one in my office. Its SO nice not to have to lug that thing everyday! I'm really not a fan of pumping, but I know it important and I'm able to make just enough milk for Avery, so I'm going to stick it out. I was blessed to be able to nurse/pump bottles for Adelyn for her first year. I hope to do the same for Avery.

My lunch hour will vary throughout the week. Some days I just eat at my desk to get more work done. Other days, like today, I will use my lunch hour to do a few things for my RMS job. It works out great and reduces the length of time I have to be there in the evenings. Just a few weeks ago I had this brilliant idea, "instead of packing my lunch every night or morning, why not pack a weeks worth of lunch and only have to do it once a week?" Genius! It saves so much time and one less thing to think about during the week. I should note that I have a fridge in my office & my lunches are fairly simple: turkey sandwich, baked chips, fruit, & cottage cheese.

5:00pm I'm done with work and head to get the kids.

5:15pm I pick up the kids! This is one of my favorite parts of the day. I love their excitement when I walk in their rooms, just melts my heart!

5:30pm We arrive home. Kyle will usually entertain the kids while I get supper together.

Today we had supper in the crock-pot waiting for us, so I just had to cook some pasta & a veggie and we were set to go! I love crock-pot and making freezer meals ahead of time! Avery has started solids now. During this time Kyle will usually feed Avery his cereal and a fruit or veggie.

6:00/6:15pm We sit down to supper. We leave Avery in his high chair and give him some puffs or a mum mum to keep him entertained while we eat. I love our meal time in the evenings. Adelyn is usually our entertainment, either singing a song or telling us about her day, she's a little chatter box!

6:45pm I will get supper cleaned up and Kyle runs the bath water. We usually tag team. One of us will clean the kitchen the other will give baths. Works out great! We give Adelyn & Avery their baths together, 2 birds with one stone! Recently we removed the "sling" part of Avery's baby bath tub and he is moving ALL over the place! Sure does make bath time more eventful, he is such a busy boy!

7:10pm Done with baths and get both kids in PJs. I nurse Avery during this time and Kyle usually reads to Adelyn and snuggles in the chair while watching one of her shows.

7:40pm Avery is in bed for the night! Some nights I will put Adelyn to bed. We read books, sing, say prayers, and snuggle a little. But if its a night I have to do my RMS job Kyle puts her to bed, which just so happened to be tonight.

8:00pm-10pm I head to Target to do my various jobs for RMS. I usually spend 2 nights/week doing this. It does cut out on my "me time" at home, but we have a few goals we're working on and this is a great way to help us achieve those goals quicker!

10:10pm I head back home to pump before bed, get Avery's milk read for the next day, and hit the hay!

And it all starts over again the next day! The funny thing was that when I was writing this I kept thing that I really don't have a "typical" day and I'm sure all of you Mommies out there would agree! There are so many variations, especially when you have young kids! It makes life interesting and I sure wouldn't change it for a thing!

We usually get the majority of our cleaning done on Saturday and Sunday is laundry day.  Currently I feel like our weekends we play catch up and the house is all spic & span for the week to start and then it just gets messy all over again! Such a vicious circle! I try not to stress too much over the little things and just enjoy time with my family, especially since they are only little once!

We also spend our weekends with friends, family, or in Iowa City getting our fill of Hawkeye football! This is our 6th season of being season ticket holders. It is hard to be away from our kids all week and then all day Saturday too, but its only 7-8 Saturdays in the fall and essentially we count this as our "vacation" for the year. Our hope is to purchase 2 more seats so we can have 4 and make it a family tradition to spend our Saturdays in the fall in Iowa City cheering on our Iowa Hawkeyes!

Since Avery was born in March Kyle and I haven't been very good about making time for each other. So we've decided to have a date night at least once a month. Last month we went to an acadeplla group the college was hosting {read: free!} and had a really nice time! It was fun to do something different, doesn't always have to be dinner & a movie! This month we're going to a banquet {at the college again...next month won't be at work, promise!}. Its so good to get out & have time with just the two of us and I truly believe it makes us better parents.

Park Fun

A local elementary park is only 2 blocks from our house. We have spent MANY afternoons/evenings this summer at the park! If we let her, Adelyn would go everyday! Kyle and I get off work at 4 instead of 5 in the summers and that hour makes such a huge difference!
At the beginning of the summer Adelyn wasn’t too interested in swinging, but now she has discovered the joy of swinging and LOVES it! I think it helps that she found one at the park where her feet touch the ground. Daddy also lowered the swing on our swing set at home too.

Avery is a good sport, usually, when we go to the park. Most of the time, he will just nap in the stroller. Even when he isn’t napping he is usually fairly content. I think the boy just loves the outdoors!
IMG_1509
And of course the slide is a hit with this little girl as well! Pretty sure she goes down the slides 132 times each time we visit the park! I love watching her enjoy all the fun the park has to offer! Mommy & Daddy even join her in the fun!

Adelyn has also discovered the rock climbing walls at the playground. She does really well, but it sure does make this mama nervous!!
Most recently we haven’t been able to enjoy the park as much because it’s been 90+ degree (even in the evenings when we get home). Hopefully the temps even out and we can enjoy our afternoons at the park before summer is gone.

New Year’s Eve

So I just found this post…and just had to get it posted because this is what I use to scrapbook! Only 8+ months late! ha!

IMG_4220

For New Year’s Eve we hung out with Mindi & Preston and Preston’s brother, Nate & his wife Kylie at Preston’s parents’ house. Nate & Kylie used to live in town and we had a weekly Wednesday night of 50 cent tacos! It was fun to hang out again!

Deb, Preston’s Mom, made a great meal! We enjoyed the evening chatting and catching up. Thankfully Adelyn went down for the night really well in the pack n play and the rest of us broke out the games! I was surprised she slept through all our commotion of catch phrase! The girls won, btw!

IMG_4227

Staying up till midnight isn’t easy for this Mama these days, but I made it! I’m pretty sure we called it a night at 12:05 though!

IMG_4223

And thankfully despite Adelyn going to bed past her normal time she slept till 7:30am the next morning.

Avery: 5 Months

Dear Avery,
August 8th you turned 5 months old! I can hardly believe you are 1 month away(really only a few days since I’m getting this posted so late) from being 1/2 a year old, where has the time gone?!? You continue to grow, change, & learn and with each of those steps we love you more & more!
IMG_5938-001
You moved from 5oz to 6oz bottles of pumped breast milk at daycare. You will have 3 of these throughout the day, usually every 3 – 3 1/2 hours. We tried cereal during your 5th month, but you weren’t ready for it yet. You weren’t sure what to do with it and most just ended up falling out of your mouth. More on this in your six month post next month!
IMG_5939
We have kept the same bedtime routine the same: bath, nurse, {Mommy gives you a small too, just to make sure you are full!}, snuggle, white noise machine, and then bedtime. You continue to sleep about 7:30am-ish till 6am-ish. Mommy loves her quiet times with you snuggled in the glider in your room!
Mommy has come to the conclusion that you like to be entertained. If we are on the go running errands, visiting friends, at church, out to eat, etc you are completely happy & content. No one believes that you have your fussy moments because you are always happy & smiling when we are out & about! But some of those normal evenings where we are just home hanging out you want to be held or entertained constantly. There is no setting you in your bouncy seat or jumper, for very long anyway!
IMG_5942
This month you rolled tummy to back for the first time and you are close to rolling back to tummy! I think you actually had done it a few times before Mommy got to see it, little stinker! We were at Mark & Kathy’s house and you were on the floor playing and you rolled from your tummy to your back. Mommy was excited to see your “first” roll over, but Daddy informed he had witnessed it the day before!
You aren’t quite doing the the “tripod” yet. You really want to sit up, but just aren’t quite strong enough yet. You will fall to the side or backwards fairly quickly!
You continue to put everything & anything in your mouth! And you are reaching for anything within your grasp! In the evenings we put you in the bumbo on the kitchen table while we eat supper and you are constantly looking for the next thing you can reach and put in your mouth!
IMG_5944
You are still wearing size 2 diapers. And mostly 3-6 month clothes and just a couple 9 month summer outfits I wanted you to be able to wear before it got cool out. I’m pretty sure you won’t be in these much longer! You are such a big boy!
Your big smile & giggle can completely turn anyone’s day around. Mommy loves your roly poly thighs and soft kissable cheeks! We are so blessed with you, our sweet boy and your Daddy, big sister, and I all love you very much!

Avery: 4 Months

Dear Avery,
July 7th you turned 4 months old! There were a lot of changes in your fourth month and Daddy, big sister, & I grew even more in love with you!IMG_5814-001
You started 4 1/2 & then moved to 5oz bottles when you’re at daycare. You still continue to eat about every 3 hours. Sometimes you’ll go 3 1/2-4 hours between feedings, but that’s rare. I don’t think you’re quite ready for that 4 hour schedule yet. You are also spitting up a lot less. I said this out loud to Daddy one day and the next morning when we were ready to walk out the door you projectile puked all over Daddy! Jinx! A change of clothes was in order for both boys!IMG_5821
Over the 4th of July weekend we took advantage of a four day weekend and decided to stop swaddling you at night. I was nervous that you would wake yourself, but you surprised us and slept just like any other night (about 10 hours) and have done so every since! WTG Avery! We still have kept the same bedtime routine of bath, nurse, {Mommy gives you a small too, just to make sure you are full!}, snuggle, white noise machine, and then bedtime.
You have the sweetest giggle! In the words of your Doctor, “Your 4 months, everyone is your friend!”. If we talk to you, tickle you, or sing you give us the biggest smile and also a some very sweet giggles! You especially love your big sister. Anytime you hear or see her your eyes are 100% glued on her to see what she’s up to! I love watching your relationship grow!IMG_5819
Despite those wonderful smiles and sweet giggles (and all these smiley pictures!), you have your moments where you aren’t too happy as well (gotta keep it real). In those moments there isn’t much we can do to soothe you. You must just need some time! Mommy is chalking it up to teething right now. We haven’t seen any pearly whites yet, but you sure are gnawing and biting on anything you can get yours hands on, including your own fingers & hands!
(you were “talking” to mama in this picture!)IMG_5820
Speaking up of your hands, you are grabbing and reaching for everything & anything these days. Its so fun to watch you explore and play with toys you find! You still aren’t rolling yet, but you sure do roll from side to side (when you’re on you’re back) with your feet up in the air.
You still aren’t the best in the nap department. We’ve had a few weekends where you’ve given us a 1 1/2-2 hour nap, but those aren’t comment. And at daycare you usually don’t nap more than 20-30 minutes at a time. Hopefully you will continue to improve in this department!IMG_5822
You went through a big growth spurt this month. Some days when I would pick you up after work, I would have sworn you grew from the time I dropped you off that morning! You are now wearing size 2 diapers. And Mommy switched over your closet & put away your 0-3 month clothes, so you are now wearing 3-6 months. I’m pretty sure you won’t be in these much longer! You are such a big boy!IMG_5828-001
We are so blessed to have you sweet boy! Its so fun watching you grow and change, but can you slow down, just a bit? Your Daddy, big sister, and I all love you very much!
Love, Mommy

Sleepy Boy

I think daycare must have worn Avery out! He just couldn’t make it through bath time the other night! Sweet boy!
